Great Blue Heron

Ξ November 14, 2008 at 11:17 am | → 0 Comments | ∇ Image of the Day |

I was working this morning and looked out the window to see a Great Blue Heron sitting on top of my neighbors roof. By the time I had grabbed my camera and put on a long lens, the heron was ready to hit the skies. So I was just able to fire off a few shots before it quickly moved out of sight.

I am constantly amazed at my cameras’ technical abilities. I invest a lot of money trying to provide my clients with the very best equipment because of the challenging situations we often find ourselves in when shooting wedding photography. It definitely pays off, and they appreciate it. This shot was taken from inside my house, through a low-e glass window that hasn’t been washed in years (I can’t believe I am admitting that publicly!), through a screen, at 100 yards from the subject on an overcast day, handheld.

Try that with your Canon Rebel, Uncle Bob.

Jack - Frosty Morning Run

Ξ October 31, 2008 at 9:03 am | → 0 Comments | ∇ Image of the Day, In The Woods, Man's Best Friend |

Poor Jack. He’s has been photographically neglected for a few months now as I have really not had a whole lot of time to play. So this morning I decided that no matter what, we were going to have a session on his regular romp in the park, and it turned out to be a beautiful morning to do it. After chasing many sticks and romping through the grass, he decided it was time to rest in a frost covered patch. I suppose he kind of enjoyed the sun on his back and the cool grass underneath. All that running had made him hot and he was satisfied to just chomp and a select stick for a few minutes. As soon as he lay down, the steam started rising from underneath him. It really was a satisfying moment for both of us. A little rest was in order.

Image of the Day - Cold as Ice

Ξ January 20, 2008 at 9:50 pm | → 0 Comments | ∇ Downtown, Events, Image of the Day |

Tripped downtown today to see the Nashville Portraits: Photographs by Jim McGuire exhibit at the Art Museum of Western Virginia. Even though I’m not a huge country music fan, some of my favorite music artists are pure country. There’s Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Vince Gill, and Doc Watson (who btw is playing at the Jefferson Center on March 7th…..got my tickets!). They were all in there. There was even a portrait of Carole King. Most were beautiful silver prints but there were a few digital prints in there as well. It was a small exhibit by most standards but if you’re into photography or country music or both, it is definitely one to see. McGuire’s career as one of Nashville’s premiere album photographers has spanned more than 30 years so it is a fascinating a walk down memory lane and some mighty fine portrait photography.

After the exhibit I checked out the new Mexican restaurant Alejandro’s, which took over the space vacated by the recent closing of the much loved Green Dolphin Grille on Campbell Ave. I gotta say that I have a new fave place for Mexican now. Great food and a total bonus with the Salsa Bar and its wide assortment of gourmet salsas. HOT! MMMmmm.

Of course today was just a little cold with temps in the 20’s and a wind chill dragging that down about 10+ degrees. Tonight is supposed to be the coldest of the year so far with temps dipping in the single digits. So, how appropriate it is to display this shot of a fine item I saw today in the window at Twists & Turns. All that glitters is not gold. Stay warm!
